In Kitchen, Banana Yoshimoto wrote, “Someday, without fail, everyone will disappear, scattered into the blackness of time.”. With the aforementioned novel being written in 2010, I can’t believe it took me a decade and two years to find this wonderful read. Thankfully, one of my good friends Terra made it a reading for this month in a book club with my wonderful sisters.
Kitchen largely talks about grief and while I have not suffered much and significant losses (pertaining to those crossing the other side), I have felt such great sorrow upon reading the book. This particularly points to the dimensions of grief I have experienced in in the for the last 12 years. It’s astounding how I have lived majority of this life not having found this masterpiece. I’m so glad I did this year.
Curated at 3AM, this playlist includes The Wild Reeds, Bon Iver, and Boy Scouts. Grief, despite the diversity of it, seems like a universal language we’ve yet to speak at least twice in our lifetime.
